Overview
Cool Jugs (US Patent # 6,408,803) is a complete, bolt-on kit
that will allow a conventional air cooled O-360 or O-540 parallel
valve Lycoming engine to be converted to liquid cooling. The result
is a fully liquid cooled aircraft piston engine. An engine that
operates at a stable 190 degF without any*
need for airflow over or through the engine compartment.
The Cool Jugs conversion kit is not certified for use on type
certificated aircraft and is for experimental
use only.
The liquid cooling conversion system consists of the following components:
The Cool Jugs liquid cooled conversion requires absolutely
no internal engine modifications! In fact no existing
reciprocating/moving components are changed in any manner. The
conversion creates only one additional moving part - the coolant
pump, which is grear driven via a standard accessory pad.
Why Convert an Existing Air Cooled Engine to Liquid-Cooling?
While air-cooled engines have demonstrated good reliability and are relatively simple in design they also have significant drawbacks:
- High operating temperatures
- Relatively short life spans
- High cooling drag
- Complex operating procedures
- Unstable engine temperatures
High operating temperatures and the resulting thermal cycle range of air cooled engines result in significant (and costly) stress to cylinder heads and exhaust valves. Conversion to liquid-cooling allows engines to operate within a much more manageable (and beneficial) temperature range, resulting in:
- Longer engine life
- Reduced cooling drag
- Simplified operation
- Increased power & performance
- Stable engine teperatures
- Elimination of shock cooling
